I say the weekend, but I feel like I’ve been doing this for the last month! We have recently returned from Winter Break here, and when I say recently, more than three weeks ago but I miss it. A lot. While the holidays are always a busy time, it snowed for a week here, meaning than no one went out anywhere. For reference, look up snowfalls on the West Coast of Canada. Sure, it’s Canada, but everyone else in Canada has a giggle at our expense out here when civilization collapses at a dusting. I kid you not…Snowmageddon is a word in normal use here, and it does not take much to make the city grind to a halt.
But, is that such a bad thing? Enforced coziness is surely not something to sneeze at.
At any rate, because I’m a teacher, I was fortunate enough to not have to struggle out into the snow in order to work or accomplish normal tasks. I’ll digress here for a second to say, yes, I fully recognize that this is not something I can, or will, ever take for granted, and I appreciate those who struggled out into the weather in order to keep things going.
All that aside, however, it made me think about the fact that being able to hibernate when it’s cold and snowy outside is an utter delight. I started considering all the ways in which hibernation could be done and thought I would do as many as I could during the holidays before heading back to work in January.
Here they are, in no particular order. Except the first one. It’s in a particular order because it’s my favourite.
Read.
I read so much over the break. Reading is my favourite hobby, bar none, so any time I have me time, it tends to be my default. In case roaming around this blog hasn’t hinted at it, I’m a big reader, and I enjoyed reading as much as I could over the break. In order to make it extra cozy, I deliberately only read books that would be fun and enjoyable. This is not to say that reading literary fiction, classics, mysteries, romances, whatever aren’t awesome. They are. But my particular cozy this time was a series of YA books. And I loved it shamelessly.
Catch up on Streaming TV
I binged a couple of shows on Netflix that were there for utter enjoyment. So, my suggestion here, as above, is to choose content that is simply enjoyable. Don’t watch the shows that you “should” watch or the ones that you think will be intelligent to discuss when you go back to work, or the one that someone recommended that you feel obligated to watch. No…watch the show that feels almost like a guilty pleasure because it’s just so much fun. Watch that one.
Wear your fuzziest things.
The most comfy things should be saved for such an occasion. They should be warn often and shamelessly and in the middle of day when you are supposed to be doing something Useful. Wear them. Without doing anything Useful. With glee.
Drink warm beverages in very large mugs.
My personal favourite is coffee but I drank large amounts of tea, as well. But honestly? Choose what makes you happy because that’s what hibernating is all about.
Those are my recommendations. For a gold star, be curled up on the couch, fuzzy things on, good book in hand, a truly delicious list of shows on your playlist to watch, and a warm drink in an immense mug. Feel the cozy.
